The 10 year old says: "This book was very entertaining and funny"We bought the audiobook and listened to it on the way to and from school. The person reading is absolutely brilliant and definitely needs a raise. She brought the story to life and made us laugh out loud. The word, "Maaayyyheeemm" with raised fist has entered into our family's lexicon.Very highly recommended, both book and audio. I'm pretty frugal and like my audiobooks to be between $1 and $5. This audiobook falls well out of that range, but was worth every penny. Absolutely brilliant. We bought the next story immediately finishing this one.
I bought and read this second book in the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place series right after I finished the first one. The second book continues the series as Miss Penelope Lumely (Lumawoo!) and the children are temporarily relocated in London. The children have made such growth from their wolfish beginnings and I wanted to read more about them. But I found that this second book focused more on Penelope as she starts to uncover hints at a deeper and complicated mystery that involves not just the children, but also herself and her past. A lot of old characters from the first book are brought back and we're introduced to a couple new ones who were delightful additions.I love these books because they combine the Gothic mysteriousness from classics that I love, with the whimsical fun and craziness of a children's book. My one compliant with this book is that I felt like the ending was not satisfactory. The action just started to jumble together and was resolved in an odd way that left way more questions than answers. Actually the entire book just brings in more questions and doesn't answer any of the old ones raised from the first book. But despite my frustration with this, I still enjoyed the act of reading this story and going along with these characters on their mysterious fun journey.
This book along with the other two are great! The descriptions are great, the characters are funny, the writing is witty, it’s all good! It’s a great ride. Time to pick up the next one and continue to solve the mystery.Whose the guest? Read on to find out...
Well written. My 4th grade granddaughter and I are reading these. We then discuss points of interest and try to solve the many mysteries. We're re on book 4. We both can't wait to read more, as we're both book worms. It's very special to me to be able participate with her. I know she's having fun too. Looking forward to finding out what is next.. Glad to have added the series to my library.
Just as described! If you haven't checked out this series, do! You will not be disappointed, especially if you like well-written, humorous stories similar to Lemony Snicket. This reader is the BEST, too! She will keep you laughing and even your youngest child engaged in the story!
Maryrose Wood is a genius! My son and I have had so much fun reading these delightful books together. They are clean, witty, and full of romping, good fun. I love the way Wood sneaks in little tidbits about language and culture, teaching children while keeping things light and engaging. I highly recommend these books for read aloud purposes--just as much fun for mom and dad as for the children.
At first I thought this series of books was a bit strange for my taste--even fiction has to be somewhat believable for me. But, when I realized that it was a satire on Victorian social mores and the class system of the time, I thought it was a clever and humorous way to expose snobbery, callousness, and pretension. The mystery element keeps one guessing as well. I am looking forward to the fourth book in the series.
After reading through the first and second books in this series I promptly bought and read the third book that same weekend. While I still enjoyed reading about Miss Penelope Lumely and the three Incorrigible children, I liked this book the least out of the three. There was less development in the characters and more focus on new unappealing characters, a convoluted plot with everyone having their own scheme, and an uninteresting hunt. I found I was reading this book more for any answers it might provide (very few of course) and ended up speed reading through it. We do meet some interesting characters from the children's past but that's about it. We meet them. We don't learn anything more about them or the children. I still love this series and it's fine line between the Gothic and silly, but my frustration with the lack of answers only grows. I really fear that this is planned to be a crazy long neverending series where teeny bits of secrets are unraveled book by book oh so slowly. I'll keep reading these books, but I'm hoping that the story will pick up a bit more and reveal a lot more.
