About the Author
John M. Samson is an expert crossword puzzle constructor and editor. His crosswords have been published in leading magazines and newspapers across the country, including The New York Times. The paper won't suck the ink out of your pen, and the pages are perforated for easy removal, but this series -- and this issue in particular -- are not carefully edited. Series e.g.: more than once you will be required to enter "reeds" for the definition "flutes and oboes"; the flute is definitely not a reed. In this particular issue (#2), e.g.: the clue is "neighbor of Niger", four spaces for letters. No problem; Niger has two neighbors with four letter names, Chad and Mali. As I already had an "l" and an "i" the answer had to be Mali. But no, the M didn't allow me to figure out the word that crossed it. Finally, all other spaces filled, I had to check the answers, which told me the neighbor of Niger was Bali. Bali? There's no Bali in Africa, let alone a neighbor of Niger.However, you really should purchase this edition as a souvenir for this reason: puzzle number 141 has as across clue #5 "Taj Mahal builder", with the answer "Trump", and down clue #10 "5 across, notably" with the answer "firer"! N.B., this issue copyrighted 2008; this review written in 2016.
These are my favorite puzzle books, even though they contain some errors. Singular and multiple gets mixed up, foreign place names are in the wrong country or misspelled. Still, great puzzles.
My two favorite crossword books are Simon & Shuster's "Mega" and "Super". The "Super" is an oldie with very few issues still available. Both books have pen-friendly, smooth, bright white paper with nicely perforated pages. I can easily remove a few pages at a time to clamp onto a clipboard.
This is a great book size-wise, I won't run out of puzzles any time soon, but the puzzles are a little unusual compares to most; sometimes it seems like they almost make up new words. It's fine, just not your typical crosswords.
Have been Buying these Crossword Books for a few Years and Very Pleased with the Varietyof Themes and the Challenges they Impose!! There are 300 Puzzles in each Book which havelasted me for over a month for each Book. Would Highly Recommend them to Crossword Lovers!!
I especially like the perforated pages so you can tear them out of the book and work them without having to deal with the spine while writing.
