First I am so happy to read another book by Marina Adair. I love her writing style. Mackenzie is a songwriter that has been in love with Hunter , a singing star, from the start. Hunter goes in another direction and Mackenzie loses her sight. When they met again Mackenzie is trying to forge her independence. Hunter wants to write songs with her. Mackenzie still loves Hunter but is afraid to work with him again. Hunter realizes how special she is to him. Hunter wants to help her navigate into the seeing world. She finally agrees to write music with him. Hunter is falling for her compassionate nurturing nature. I love when Hunter realizes he chooses Mackenzie freely and willingly. It takes awhile but Mackenzie finally realizes she can be independent and also have Hunter in life to share her victories. Mackenzie knows she can take care of her self that does not mean anything if she does not have Hunter to share her life with. They both realize love is journey.
I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been anxiously awaiting the next book in this author’s The Eastons series. Initially, this was supposed to be that book. (Unfortunately, I cannot find the heartfelt and informative e-newsletter in which the author explains that last sentence.) As of right now, this book seems to be a standalone. I wouldn’t be surprised if the author later makes it into a series, though. There are some interesting characters that she can work with. Not that this story doesn’t have a finite ending…it does. But I think Hunter’s single cousins deserve some HEA themselves.From the way this book started off, I really thought it was going to take a lot for me to like Hunter. He did absolutely nothing wrong, but I was making assumptions on his character. Then we get to see pushy Hunter that seems a bit entitled, and I was still not sure about him. Once the story gets going and all parties are thrown together, I realized I had Hunter all wrong. The man may have a bit of an ego and be a bit like a steamroller when he sets his sights on something, but he’s all heart. And you can’t blame the guy for the ego. By all rights his ego should be even bigger than it is already. Plus, when he’s steamrolling over things it’s always because he’s trying to do things to help others.Mackenzie is frustrating. She’s also a wonderful person with a heart of gold, but she really holds herself back. I enjoy her friend/mentor/sponsor Tia calling her out on that. Because Mackenzie is such a sweetheart, nobody else is tough with her. Not that she’s let a lot of people into her bubble in the last few years. But those that are in that bubble tend to cater to her rather than finding a way to help her cater to herself.The story of Mackenzie and Hunter is the story of them finding that balance of tough love and romantic love. The story of Hunter realizing he doesn’t have to take care of everyone, whether it’s Mackenzie or his band or his crew. The story of Mackenzie finding her independence while also accepting help when it’s needed. Not just on her terms, but on the mutual terms. Mackenzie always had a backbone, she just needed to find it again.I know I’m being a bit vague about what Mackenzie’s issues are, but I hate spoilers. It’s revealed quite quickly in the story, but it’s not my place to ruin that for you. I want to say that I don’t believe I read a book that deals with her particular problem though. What I really appreciated is the problem isn’t something she has had throughout her life, it’s something Mackenzie is learning to navigate as the story unfolds. So the reader really gets an education on this issues she has. I think of myself as a pretty empathetic person, but this story really opened my eyes to issues I didn’t fully realize before. When a book can entertain you, give you all the feels, and educate you at the same time…I’d say that’s a winner.
I love all things Marina Adair and I LOOOOOOOVED this book! I was quickly hooked on Mackenzie's and Hunter's story. I was curious as to what made Mackenzie run away, but enjoyed the way Marina told her story. Her dog Muttley was also quite the character. He made me laugh out loud at times and I was thankful he was there for her. Mackenzie hasn't had an easy life and things got a bit harder for her. But she was making life happen, albeit a bit on the sidelines. Hunter is trying to work on his album but he misses his best friend. His songs aren't working out the way he needs them to and he's desperate to work with songwriters he has never met, but has used their songs in the past. I enjoyed the way Hunter's family is involved in his life and also the way they care about Mackenzie. While life threw them together again, things weren't the same and they had to forge a new path. But, the feelings between them and stronger than ever and I enjoyed the heat and the build-up between them. I enjoyed the way Hunter pushes Mackenzie and wants to help her be the strong woman she is. This sweet, second-chance story was a book I didn't want to put down and I couldn't read it fast enough! I highly recommend this book!
I've been a long time reader of Marina Adair's and the many wonderful Romance series she's penned. She's an amazing writer whose works have been adapted for use on the Hallmark Channel, but are really best enjoyed by reading them - and painting her characters as she creates them in your imagination!! She's an incredible storyteller and developer of characters.Promise Me You is a truly amazing story. The heroine, Mackenzie, is a young and talented songwriter with a genetic issue that leads to her going blind. I really can't imagine what that would be like, but Marina has obviously researched - or perhaps has related experience - so that Mackenzie's character is real and raw. I was gripped from the first chapter. I love Ms. Adair' storytelling anyway, and as I read this one, I was completely engrossed in the story to the point that I felt what I think Mackenzie was feeling. Hero Hunter is just a WONDERFUL character - especially for a lover of Country Music such as I am!! I rooted for both of them throughout the entire story!!I've loved literally everything Marina has written, and I wait on pins and needles for each new book she releases, but I have to be honest - this one just blew me away completely. I think it might be her best work yet. I was crying, laughing, and sighing in equal measure, and I couldn't stop until I reached the end... then I read it all over again!!!Don't miss this story if you love sweet, sexy, emotional contemporary romance with real depth and wonderful story lines. It's totally 5-stars, and now on my list of "forever favorites" - books that I will likely re-read several times!
