K-Gr 2—The road rises up to meet a bicycle-riding rabbit throughout this travelogue written by the author of Sophie's Squash (Random, 2013). Unless there are a lot of big vehicles, visual subplots, or a compelling narrative arc, the metaphorical use of roads easily becomes too abstract for young children—and clichéd. Miller employs singsong verses throughout, preceded by the word roads, an ellipsis, and a verb, e.g., "Roads…zoom./Beneath city buildings that tower on high,/twinkling like stars/in the dark velvet sky/Racing past signs./Reflecting their light./Zigging and zagging./Turn left. Then turn right." These constructions prove confusing, as it isn't clear whether it's the buildings or the roads that are "twinkling" and "racing." The rabbit and an owl interact with an assortment of anthropomorphized creatures as the road bends, merges, remembers, and ultimately returns home. Wheeler's watercolor and gouache scenes are defined with delicate ink lines. Pink and peach are the predominant colors of the sky, sea, trees and landscape. This palette and the settings—a paddle boat turned restaurant, a turreted tree house, a walled city hosting a carnival—create an exotic atmosphere. This has become a new favorite in our home. We are a military family, and with that, comes the challenge of raising children with ever-changing circumstances. This book perfectly describes all of life's adventures, twists and turns, but comes back to one central message: all roads can lead you back home again. Beautiful illustrations-- definitely recommend!
This book gives a child a sense of adventure as well as the safety of a place to come home to. The text is lyrical and the illustrations are intricate and delightfully fantastical. My toddler grandson asks for this book to be read over and over again. Plus they introduce him to the idea of riding a bicycle!

I used this book as a way to surprise my kids with a cruise vacation. The book highlighted going on an adventure and where all you can go but you can always find your way back home. I put in an extra page at the end saying we've been home long enough it is time for our own adventure.
We own a lot of kids books. Like A LOT. This one is my top favorite. So incredibly beautiful and poetic. My kid is still too young to appreciate (2.5 yo) but this is one book that will definitely stay in his childhood memories, so beautiful it is.
What a lovely children's book! I borrowed a copy from the local library, read it to my toddler, liked the story and illustrations so much, I bought a copy for his Christmas present. When he unwrapped it, we read it again before putting any toys together.
A new take on finding adventures down different roads, told in engaging rhyme.
This book is beautiful for kids and grownups alike. The words and pictures are fantastic and the message about home is lovely. I read this with my son who is 4. I could even see giving this book to someone for graduation.
