Shelby Foote's "The Civil War: A Narrative" has been described by critics and readers alike as "...a classic of its kind." It took Foote 16 years and over 2,800 pages to tell the story of America's bloodiest and most tragic war. "The Civil War: A Narrative" is a long journey, but one I found well worth taking. Foote is a master at weaving the personalities and events of the Civil War into a seamless and often captivating narrative. One of the great beauties of this trilogy is Foote's ability to hold the reader's interest (he held me spellbound through all three volumes) for the long haul with his sparkling, almost musical prose.Of course, all the major battles - from Fort Sumter to Appomattox, with stops at Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and others - fairly leap, in all their horror, from these volumes' pages at the hands of this gifted writer. But Foote goes one better. Less famous battles (i.e., Pea Ridge, Perryville, The Seven Days), minor skirmishes, and other events, which receive short shrift or a passing reference at best in most one-volume accounts of the Civil War, receive much fuller treatment here. (Two prime examples of this are General U.S. Grant's seven failures on the Mississippi River as he attempted to get his army below Vicksburg, and Colonel Benjamin Grierson's cavalry raid through Mississippi in 1863.)Despite the claims of some critics who accuse Foote of "Southern bias" in his writing, I found the author's account of the Civil War to be both fair and objective. The three volumes also appear to be well founded on solid historical research. However, I would have preferred to see footnote or endnote citations of the author's sources, a more comprehensive bibliography."The Civil War: A Narrative" is a wonderful reading experience. Rich in detail, eloquently written, and imbued with first-rate scholarship, it gives readers an accurate understanding of the people and events which made up America's bloodiest conflict. For readers (like me) who want to understand the Civil War, how it was fought, won, and lost, "The Civil War: A Narrative" is indispensable. It is the central work in my Civil War library.

I just finished reading the first volume of the three volume set. It was so interesting and so well written that it took less time than I thought, reading perhaps 20 to 30 pages a day. I have to admit that it was a bit intimidating at first as the books are larger than I expected and with very narrow margins. In other words, each page is crammed with lots of words. Fortunately, those words flow amazingly smoothly and the story line and narration are superb and gripping. I'm not a Civil War buff but love reading about history and, so far, this is one of the best books I've read on any historical subject. This fascinating tale woven by Mr. Foote is well researched, extremely well written and articulated and, surprisingly, well balanced, at least so far. If you have any interest in history, especially American history, then I highly recommend this three volume set. I can't wait to get started on the second volume!

It is extremely rare to find a book so compelling you can't wait to get back to it and I spite of knowing the ending the tears for all concerned won't stop flowing. Our Nation was forged in the terrible crucible of blood and tears. Shelby Foote has finished his masterpiece and my greatest hope is that we learn from it and not repeats it ever again. May He rest in Peace

Each time I read the trilogy I came away with a greater appreciation of the literary genius of Shelby Foote. These volumes now “belong to the ages”, and the ages are grateful and much indebted.

Excellent, this work gives you the moment by moment story of the civil war. It is easy reading and explains the motivation of the historical characters mentioned in the story. I feel that I have been put back in time and that I am living the Civil War personally. . The Civil War: A Narrative war is a must read for the serious student of American History.

i can think of no one more capable of writing such a masterpiece account of the entire civil war. foote is, was, may he r.i.p,, the most knowledgeableperson on the subject hands down!!! if youre seeking the truth about the war, this is a must own item to add to your library.

We are fortunate that Shelby Foote and Bruce Catton dedicated the better part of their lives to bringing us these detailed histories of the Civil War. Foote's account reads like a novel as does Catton's. Hard to put it down. It should be required reading for every high school student in the USA.

Shelby Foote's amazing book describes in vivid detail of the accounts of the Civil War in 1862 onward. His descriptive style takes the reader back to the battlefields and leaders of each movement in amazing detail. You cannot put this series of books down, as they're engaging and riveting by all accounts. Well written and accurate in all accounts with intensity and passion that I have not read in many, many books. Very well done and this could be the definitive series that will not be superseded in 50 years.Cheers!

I learned so much from reading this series. Shelby Foote is a great story teller and does an excellent job of bring the civil war to life. There were so many instances when reading were I simply couldn't put it down. One of the most rewarding reads of my life.
