"Praise for the previous edition: "[A] refreshing, concise work aimed primarily at those contemplating or performing ecological research studies. [I]t's absolutely correct and vital information.""---Robyn K. Whipp, Austral Ecology"Praise for the previous edition: "Reading this book feels like having a good talk during a long walk in the woods with a wise and experienced advisor who really has the time to distill and share years of thinking about how ecological research works. Get it, and keep it handy, and your work will be the richer and more successful for it.""---Jessica Gurevitch, Stony Brook University, "This book . . . distills the core procedural lessons of a PhD program in ecology and presents them in an engagingly written, easily digestible packet. . . . This is an enormously valuable publication, and anyone beginning or aspiring to a graduate degree in ecology really should read it."---Robert M. Pringle, Quarterly Review of Biology"Venturing into the world of ecology can be a fulfilling, yet challenging journey. Like any journey, those best prepared, through either direct experience or having gleaned advice from their elders, will have the greatest chance of success. How to Do Ecology collates years of good advice to deliver on the latter and would be a good investment for anyone finding, or readjusting, their feet in ecological research."---Dylan Korczynskj, Austral Ecology

A relatively light, nuanced guide that covers important fundamental aspects of conducting and communicating ecological research. It conveys a necessary sense of complexity and diversity of ecological work, and gets you thinking comprehensively about 'how?' and 'why?' all the steps/aspect of the process are important on their own and in connection to each other (most, if not all the general things an advisor would want you to know). Recommended for undergraduate and graduate level students working towards a thesis, this book is also helpful in its generally educational qualities and can be effectively supplemented in intro. ecology lab courses and field courses. While this book is helpful, it tries to be a bit too helpful while remaining quite general, encompassing information required by fresh pupils who won't necessarily remain in academia, as well as by the committed grad student who is already fairly competent in much of the book's contents. This broad appeal feels like the book is making a compromise for readership from the entire spectrum of "ecologists" who don't already have their MS/Phd, and this will likely cause many to not fully identify with the book; it feels somewhat like reading two books in one, in which one of them is probably not for you, depending on who you are. While the book begins well in discussing the process of forming a research question and shaping a hypothesis on which to base your study and providing valuable tips along the way, it doesn't quite scale well and feel it loses some potency in subsequent sections. I think this book could be improved with better targetting of intermediate-level readers by limiting discussion on networking and long term professional career advice, instead focusing more on technical and methodological things such as more detailing of common pitfalls and methodological/statistical considerations, as well as enhancing its visual content. Overall this is a very readable book that makes for a concise and informative guide that can be read in a matter of days to give you knowledge that would otherwise come from several university courses, other more specific books, and valuable personal interaction with experienced people which can be very hard to come by in undergraduate spheres; however it loses one star due to unecessary breadth and purpose at the expense of detail.Another book I can recommend to be read in conjunction with this one is Statistics Without Math by William E. Magnusson. The practical comprehension of statistics that this book provides would pair quite well with How to do Ecology's more elementary teachings. Together, these books can help guide inexperienced researchers to plan their first ecological studies and to effectively see the 'big picture' of analytical and bioloigical significance - letting them hit the ground running to produce sound, cogent science.
This is a great book full of smart advise, wisdom and practical tips too. I would recommend it to any student who wants to pursue a career in Biology. It is not just for ecologists.
This book literally explains how to do ecology ie research, brainstorming, study design, follow through, and presentation. It's meant more for graduate students but I got a lot from it and will be keeping it for when I go to grad school (I'm a junior level Wildlife student at Humboldt State).
I'm recommending this book for my graduate and advanced undergraduate students in Environmental Science. It is very focused on what ecologists should do, i.e. the actions. It is a short book and would be good for a small seminar class.
I was expecting something else, more of a text book kind of thing.... It is a novel on how to do science and being an ecologist... LOVED IT
I really enjoy the title of this. It's not too big, which I appreciate since I carry so many books for school and out in the field. Arrived quickly and in perfect condition.
ripped in places but otherwise is a good cheap textbook
Excellent read, informative and helpful for striving ecologists.
