OMG!!!! - All I can say for sure is, this is one awesome book.... John O'Brien definitely has written one major hit here and if this book #1 here is any indication, people will be waiting in droves for Book #2 of this series. Count me in, as I'm hoping to be one of the first in line to get the next book just as quick as possible. I loved this book and my mind is already zeroed in wondering where the second one will take us. This is somewhat different from all my other readings in the past, but coming coming from John O'Brien, I didnt think twice about checking it out and I'm so glad I did. This book just ROCKED!!!!!! You have Heaven at one end and Hell at the other, in the middle one hundred and forty four thousand souls, now we wait and see which prevails, the goodness in people or the evil. With goodness prevailing, the earth and people may live again, but if evil prevails, all will be lost and the world will be no more. Fallen Angel Lucifer believes he has already won, for some of the few people left standing have more evil in their hearts and souls, then he could even hope for. But Archangel Michael sheds his heavenly ties, for he refuses to give up. As he believes that goodness can and will prevail, Michael becomes a mortal as he plans on being front and center, hoping the ones left, keep the love and hope strong, doing what they can to turn the tide and keep the darkness from enveloping the world forever.
When I saw what this book was about I was surprised and a little intimidated by pthe subject matter, then I started thinking, who better than John O'Brien to handle the story of the final apoclypse? O'Brien has proven he is the master of all things apocalyptic. Why not the ultimate apoclypse? No one knows for sure who wrote the book of Revelations. Some say the beloved apostle, John, others say, no. Whatever the case, my favorite author has used those scenes from the seals being opened and the trumpets being sounded to write a most scary revelation of his own. Please read the author's note before starting the book for this is in no way meant to be associated with any religion, or promote religious views so, please don't view it as that. Further words from me cannot do this book justice so I will leave you, the reader, to make your own judgement.I think the second volume is going to be even better.As always, Happy reading.
Lifting the Veil: Fallen, written by John O'Brien is a fine example of creativity. The Prologue is where the realms of good and evil are introduced and complex interactions described. In the main body of the book the characters are given purpose and direction. The storyline is easy to follow even when the story moves from one character to another and from one event to another. Attention to detail is excellent both in the personal interactions and the description of the physical world.I enjoyed this book. It was easy to read. Didn't put it down till I finished it. Lots of things happening in those pages. I recommend that you read it and just enjoy the experience.
I am without words right now, not sure what to think. Lifting the Veil is a powerful book; full of symbolism, conflict, judgement and struggle.The description of the events happening to our world and in the Heavens is incredible and agonizing. John has a mastery and a way with words to describe everything so vividly. I literally had my jaw dropped as I read about the horrors on the Pacific coast. The fight at the end with the demon and Michael was terrifying. The description of the demon was as if I was watching in full color, right there.Did I like the book? I’m not sure. It is disturbing, and real, and makes me question if I am one of the good ones. I do know I will be one of the first to buy the next one. Very excellent work, John O’Brien, 5 stars all the way.
Ok, this one is different.If you can look at every possible reason for Armageddon today, you will find John's latest fiction novel quite scary. Those of us older readers once were exposed to a tv movie in the early 1980's called "The Day After"; this novel is like that and more. In Heaven, the Revelation from the Bible is happening with Angels vs. the demons. On earth, man wages war against man. John's imagination combined with his ever present flair for description makes this book come alive. This is a must read for those that wonder what could happen if the four horsemen are let loose.
So, I will be critical first. If you are used to John's New World Order books, this is different. There is not as much character interaction. There are chapters of earthly characters or heavenly characters but there is a lot more of modern news being interwoven with a narrative of the apocalypse. So groundwork is set out, but it's almost a prequel. I'm sure book 2 will be back to normal John form. To be clear, it's an excellent book. It's just different. The comparison I would make is that this book is John's Silmarillion for this world.
I had a little trouble getting in to this at the start. I would read a few pages, then put it down. Read a few more, and put it down again. I did that for a few weeks. Then I got to around 30% in, and I couldn't put it down. After that I finished it in two days. It's completely different than every other book of John's. It's much slower paced, setting the scene for the coming apocalypse. It reminded me a little of books like Lucifer's Hammer or Alas, Babylon with crazy detailed scenes of mass destruction. By the end of the book I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I'm looking forward to whatever comes next.
I love John O'Brien's zombie series and was very excited to see a new genre from him. This book shook me to the core. I kept having to stop reading it and going back to it later after reading a "lighter", happier book. This story hits so very close to home in what is happening in our world today. It is terrifyingly real and I found myself with tears rolling down my face a few times. Be prepared for a departure from John's usual writing, but it is no less engaging and fantastic.
