I enjoy a good sexy scene as much as anyone, but I have to say at some point that enough is enough. However, that wasn’t my biggest complaint…*** SPOILER ALERT ***I couldn’t bring myself around to believing Ella had loved Bradley (deceased husband). Sure, she told herself (and us) often that she loved Bradley. Let’s review. Ella & boyfriend Bradley are at the cabin Bradley and Coop co-own. Ella & Bradley make love, then Bradley is called away on an emergency. A few hours later Coop shows up and she makes a move on him. A few hours later Bradley is back, he proposes, she accepts, they make love and get married. After that weekend she does not visit the cabin again, telling Bradley it is a chance for him to have guy time with Coop.Fast forward, Bradley has died after a long and difficult illness, and of course we are told how Ella was at his side. Now, two years after his death, she is going to the cabin to say good-bye to Bradley. Yep, the cabin she did not go to with him after making the move on Coop, she decided this is where to say her final good-bye to Bradley, really? She is certain she will not run into Coop as she left him a message that she would be there. Does she bother to verify he got the message? Nope. So of course he is there, and she starts checking out is ‘package’ within minutes of arriving at the cabin. I say she wanted Coop to be there, why else pick the cabin to say her final good-bye to Bradley? Why not verify that Coop received her message and would not be there?Have I mentioned how much Ella is in love with herself – she stayed by Bradley’s side – she tutors Coop’s younger brother who suffers with dyslexia – She carries pepper spray and a Taser – okay, she can’t raft worth a hill of beans. Have I mentioned how stupid she is? Coop, a chiropractor, is in the midst of a sexual misconduct suit. So of course Ella, a successful (yea Ella), and secret, writer of erotica, writes the details of some of their sexual encounters in one of her books. Yeah, those books that are supposed to be fiction and not based on any real person, Etc. She also gives a description of Coop, in the book, that would identify him to any woman he’d been with, that read the book. Yes Ella, after telling us how smart you are, you do something this stupid.I finished the book still not believing she loved Bradley. She made a move on Coop in between making love with Bradley. She lived out her sexual fantasies with Coop, while saying her final goody-bye to Bradley, then wrote about them. I think Ella loves Ella.
Shelly Alexander’s debut is a funny, heartfelt read that will make you laugh and cry from the very first line. Young widow Ella Dennings is a strong heroine you can’t help but love. She goes to her husband’s cabin in Red River, New Mexico for final closure two years after his death, and to finish the shockingly successful erotica series she secretly writes under the name Violet Vixen. But her peace of mind is instantly shattered when she finds her deceased husband’s best friend, womanizing chiropractor Cooper Wells, occupying it after being slapped with a nasty lawsuit by a disgruntled lover. They may not be able to stand one another, but her English bulldog Winston instantly adores Coop’s boxer Atlas. As Ella and Coop struggle to coexist, their dislike changes into something neither one expected. This story has so many great elements—Ella must find the strength to close one chapter of her life and begin another, and both Ella and Coop must mourn the loss of the man they loved. Cooper’s father and brother are charming, as are Ella’s friends new and old. And the beautiful town of Red River feels like you’re taking a vacation retreat yourself. Both Ella and Coop grow and change in unexpected ways--and Coop is definitely a "10" on the hero scale—inside and out.Family, friendship, enemies-to-lovers, secrets and twists, all in a gorgeous setting—I loved this book and couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait for this talented new author’s next book!
Favorite Quotes:Honey, when you shop at the Market, everyone knows what you eat. When I need tampons, I make the forty-minute drive all the way into Taos. Otherwise, the entire town knows it's my time of the month.Donna purred. Literally purred. Like a cat. Well, more like a mountain lion in heat.Mission accomplished. You look like a cover girl. Or Aphrodite. Every person in the room with chest hair turned to look at you when you walked in.You're my new BFF. Anyone thoughtful enough to bring me Cookies 'n Cream after a public humiliation is a friendship forged in blood.... but for the first time in my life, I wanted to live on the edge. Take a risk, throw caution to the wind and experience life going Mach five with my hair on fire.Hank has threatened to leave me if don't stop reading your books. Says he's tired of being used like a sex toy. I mean, really? What straight man in his right mind wouldn't want his wife reading your books? My Review:She was an uptight, persnickety, overly meticulous, clean freak snob with a secret identity. He was a bit of a slob, hiding out in his cabin from his current legal troubles, and found her more than annoying. They only had a co-owned cabin and her dead husband in common. So, of course, they had atomic chemistry. Sounds cheesy and angsty, but actually the story was entertaining, sweet, occasionally steamy, and often humorous. Ms. Alexander's colorful and folksy metaphors reminded me of my father's manner of speaking and often evoked amusing visuals. I enjoyed the quirky small town characters who though odd, still rang true to life. I look forward to an extended visit to the Red River Valley as I have books two and three to this series already loaded on my kindle.
In the romance genre there is some real trash out there but this book was a breath of fresh air. I loved that it still had some passionate moments without using awful language & trashy descriptive words. The storyline was intriguing and the characters very relatable. I would have liked a bit more depth into the characters but overall I thought this book was a sweet story of second chances & falling in love.
