About the Author
Owen Zupp is a published author with nearly 17,000 hours of varied flight experience. His background ranges from charter work and flight instruction to ferry flights, flight testing and the airlines. He has also served as both a Chief Pilot and Chief Flying Instructor. With 20 years in airline operations, Owen has flown both domestically and across the globe from his Australian base. He holds a Masters Degree in Aviation Management and writings on aviation have been published around the world and received various accolades and awards. In 2007 his first book, Down to Earth, was published and traces the combat experiences of a WWII RAF fighter pilot. Once again, Owen Zupp's writing has picked me up & brought me along on one of his flights, but this time it's the series of flights that took him around Australia to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Flying a Jabiru light general aviation aircraft on his own, Owen visited a number of locations around Australia that had current and/or historical relevance to aviation within our vast island continent."Solo Flight" shows you the inspirations and planning that helped make the flight possible as well as taking you along on the journey "there and back again."As I'd come to expect from his "50 Tales of Flight" book, Owen's writing is able to give you the sensation that you are there with him on his adventure, sharing his experiences both in the air and on the ground. This is a beautifully written this story about the history of Australian aviation intertwined with the story of Owen's solo flight of a lifetime in a single engine aeroplane around Australia.Aviation has played a huge part in the growth of Australia especially in the vast distances of the Australian outback and Owen tells us the stories of the early pioneers so very eloquently. His 'Solo Flight' takes us to many of these amazing places where the pioneers started and where they achieved greatness in the early days of aviation. Not only do we learn about the amazing history but we also enjoy Owen's flight with all the reliability and technology that aviation offers us today.This is a story of about airmanship, it is a story about the history of aviation in Australia but most of all it is a story that captures the true passion of flight. Its a book for anyone who has ever gazed at the sky and wondered: 'What if I could......' and it comes with my absolute highest recommendation. I know that you will love it.
As an aircrft enthusiast my view is totally unrepresentatve, but I loved it as it reminded me of those rollicking adventure stories I read as a boy. I was engrossed in the trip and impressed with Owen's meticulous attention to detail. As they say: "There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots". As well as being a great read, it should be required reading for any trainee pilot.
One of the best things about this book is that it would appeal to a range of ages. The writing is very clear and supplemented with some really outstanding photographs -- there's a "something for everyone" element to it. You could say it's like a great geography lesson in the form of a true-life adventure. Informative and entertaining and always moving, I'd recommend "Solo Flight" without reservation.
Owen has this wonderful ability to make you feel you are his co-pilot as he describes his solo flight around Australia in another beautifully written book. As he takes you on his journey from planning to successful completion, you share with Owen his passion for flight and the emotions surrounding his visits to places of interest including those he once visited with his dear dad, a decorated Korean war veteran pilot.His vision and sheer determination to make this flight a reality is a great story in itself. The adventure is so well told you feel you have been on this journey too. For those of us who can only wonder what it must be like to take to the skies with an aircraft at our command, through 'Solo Flight' we are given the opportunity to share this exhilarating experience.
Owen's latest book has something for just about everyone. As he weaves his way around Australia, the reader is woven into not only the history of aviation in Australia, but his personal history as well. As someone who inherited the aviation gene from his parents (and who also lost a father to cancer), I felt like I was sitting in the right seat on the journey.With a busy life, I often find it hard to read more than a few pages at a time of any book, but kept finding an excuse to go back and read "just one more chapter". There was no cliff-hanger and no plot twist, but I found myself compelled to find out what that next day would be like.
Owen's done it again. He takes the reader not only on a ride around our wide brown land, but also through the planning stages and the amount of work involved in getting such a venture off the ground. Owen combines the best of both worlds for an aviation geek like me: not only can he fly and fly well, but he can also relate his experiences eloquently, putting the reader in the copilots's seat. Highly recommended.
