Based on the cover, you'd think this is a book about shifters or something, which it isn't, and the synopsis, well, doesn't say a whole lot. Ermenilda had hoped to become a nun, but her father marries her off to warlord Wulfhere instead, to secure his borders. Their relationship gets off to a very rocky start. Members of her mother's family had been slaughtered by Wulfhere's family five years earlier. She's a Christian, but he was baptized only to gain her hand. This was very well written, and the amount of researchdone shows. Interesting details related to time and place are dropped into the story seamlessly. It's the third in the Kingdom of Mercia series. I haven't read the others, yet I didn't feel lost and I never noticed any of that recapping that authors tend to do (and overdo). The characters felt as if they might pop right up off the pages. My favorite was the cantankerous aunt from Ely (married for years yet still virgin!)..Can't wait to read the others in the series now. If you like romance with some history, and ancient Britain interests you at all, you owe it to yourself to give this one a try.
Erminilda is a beautiful young noblewoman forced to wed Wulfere the Anglo-Saxon king. She struggles to meet the expectations of her ordained place in society but her family is in conflict with her husband. The story line and setting rings true to the tumultuous period in English history and was very interesting. The great kingdoms were in their infancy and barbarity reigned, leaving only the church as a haven of peace for a gentle soul like the heroine. While there were few anxious moments where the reader might be on the edge of the seat, the story line rolled along smoothly and logically. I found the main characters interesting and fairly well developed, although I felt the minor characters were somewhat less engaging and seemed to be meant to simply move the story along rather than compell it forward. The setting was rich with detail and the author's mastery of this dynamic period of history is sound. I recommend this story.
I received an ecopy from Kindle Scout in exchange for a review but also as thanks for support of this book. The cover and title of the book lured me into my Kindle Scout support, as paranormal romance is my favorite genre, and wolves got me thinking, shifters. Of course, I never paid any attention to the blurb attached to it for an inkling of the book's contents. But what a pleasant surprise. Here is a medieval romance set in the 7th century England. This is the genre that started me reading and loving romance books back in those exciting 70's!! Lol. I fell in love with these characters and the whole medieval mood was very impressive and yes, romantic. A very rocky path to love and romance. But still, a lovely read and so worth the time.
Dawn of Wolves (Kingdom of Mercia #3) by Jayne Castel is a kindle scout book. I haven't read the first two books and I didn't get lost. I am not one for romance but yeah, look at this cover! Wow, I am old but I still have some hormones! Anyway, this was a lot better than I thought a romance novel was going to be. It was a historical one, maybe that made it better. A good plot, developed characters, and not centered around sex like a lot of "romance' novels I have read. This actually has a story! Good book, I can't believe I am saying this about a romance novel, but yes, a very good book!
I had expected this book to be about shifters, but it wasn't much to my delight. Although a romance, it's more heavily into the historical aspect. A few sex scenes, but not overly explicit. The author has toned down the historical characters (see note at the end) so they are more likable. Even so, the book story shows the brutal side of life during the time period. In all, I enjoyed it, and think those who like historical romances will enjoy it as well.
I thought this was a well-paced read. My main point of contention is the choice the heroine made because I felt it was both "below the belt" & selfish. She didn't fully care or consider the repercussions her actions would have on others. Overall it was good, but I wouldn't continue on in this series.
This Kindle Scout selection was a wonderful surprise. I never expected to find such a wonderful book. Love reading about the 7th century and Miss Castel did a great job presenting the time period and characters. The story was engaging, interesting and well timed. The love story presented the difficulties of arranged marriages. The book was elxcellent in every way.
I knew there would be sex scenes. 4 rating instead of 5 as a protest that we should be forewarned. I read all three because I just can't find any good writers. Very real, great characters. I just wish there was something without explicit sex, not a clean read, sex is fine-- just don't want explicit details.
