About the Author
Seán de Gallai was born in Donegal in 1980. Always keen on writing he studied script-writing classes and worked on award winning Irish language TV drama 'Seacht'. He then began to focus on novels. The Dancer is his first novel. He works as a Primary School Teacher in Dublin.

Wow! Amazing book!
Not what I was expecting at all. I loved it. I read it straight through in one go which never happens recently because babies, but I just ignored everything else, I was so absorbed. For me it really captured that sense of injustice that pervades adolescence and so it felt really satisfying. A refreshingly unprincessy female protagonist in this age of gendered everything as well. I wish there was more!
If I could give a 0 I would. I bought this for my 13 yr old daughter who Irish dances. TOTALLY NOT what she expected. Thanks for introducing my daughter to the "F" word. This book is awful. Don't waste your money !
I enjoyed the premise. As an adult Irish dancer who enjoys good YA fiction, the book was right up my alley. However, the ending left me disappointed. Without giving away any spoilers, I will say that I kept waiting for the "things are not what they seem" that the blurb promised. I kept waiting for Alex to discover the "more about her family" that was promised. There was never any mystery; it was a mystery to the reader, but Alex never learned anything new. And some of the conflicts were too easily solved, while the big one, the reason she left home in the first place (which happened in a fairly un-believable way, and continued to be an unrealistic setup for most of the book) is never resolved! The book ends abruptly. And while Alex flirts with the idea of returning to ballet and/or starting Irish dance :the whole time: - she never does!! It seems like the book ends with (hopefully) the intention to continue the story in a second book. I like the characters; Alex and Kate are likable and realistic (although Kate reads about 11, not 9), but the story is just off somehow. Alex's take on the Irish dance world is very funny, and I did enjoy following her, but the ending just fell flat.
